New York Times: gesprek over oorlogsfotografie in Irak

In late October Joao Silva, Max Becherer and Franco Pagetti, three highly experienced photographers who have covered every phase of the Iraq conflict, came together in the Baghdad Bureau of The New York Times during their rotations in Iraq. They took time out to discuss the conflict and how it has evolved since 2003. (Listen to their conversation.)

Their wide-ranging discussion covered issues of security, access, their relationships with western colleagues, Iraqi photographers and the Iraqi and American militaries. They also compared notes on their experiences when embedded with American troops, and of operating in plain sight of — and sometimes below the radar of — Sunni insurgents and Shiite militias.

They agreed that the Internet has changed all these relationships and working practices, not only tightening deadlines and increasing workloads but creating an increasing wariness toward photographers among gunmen as they have come to appreciate the speed and scope of the worldwide Web.

The conversation, hosted by The New York Times’s Baghdad Correspondent Stephen Farrell, is divided into three parts: 1. Security: ‘The Best of Times, the Worst of Times.’2. Iraqis and Embeds.3. The Internet.
